A tailor-made partnership with the Michelin Foundation
Safe and sustainable transport to go to school in South East Asia!
The dangerousness of the roads and lack of public transport substantially slows down access to education in many rural areas of South East Asia.
It has now been six years since the Michelin foundation started supporting, together with Children of the Mekong, a project called “On the way to school”. The foundation grants us not only financial support but also human support through training in road safety given on-site by Michelin employees.
Each year, we communicate the needs and projects indicated to us by our local overseers and volunteers. In 2020, despite the global pandemic, we were able to fund the following items through their support:
- 64 bikes,
- 1 motorcycle,
- 2 trucks,
- 308 helmets,
- 5 tuk-tuks,
- 30 kits for our volunteers,
- Funding for an important share of the transportation costs of the children we support in the Philippines.
All these projects have a direct impact on the day to day quality of life of the beneficiaries. For example, bikes allow them to spare time, and energy, especially for the children who used to walk for over an hour to get to school. Students can also save money on public transport.
Buying tuk-tuks for our centres in Cambodia is primarily an alternative to purchasing trucks, which are not only much more expensive but pollute more. Motorbikes, on the other hand, are often found to be less practical by our volunteers. Thanks to the tuk-tuks, we will be able to set up a school transportation scheme, make the distribution of sponsorships and food to villages a little easier, and when needed, use them to take people or children to the hospital.
The projects we lead with the Michelin Foundation fulfil the need for safe and easy transport to school and allow our local partners to accomplish their mission with the students as well!
