A well for the sponsored children at the Banteay Chhmar centre in Cambodia.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

At the Banteay Chhmar centre, 73 people, including 67 Children of the Mekong sponsored children, live, study and work together. Volunteers and local staff run educational and development programmes tailored to the students’ needs. The ultimate goal is to help these disadvantaged children secure meaningful employment and build brighter futures.

To support this, we strive to provide the best possible living conditions at the centre. Over the past two years, dry seasons have lengthened noticeably, making water shortages a recurring challenge. The centre’s rainwater pond no longer holds sufficient water to withstand these extended dry periods, and rising temperatures have increased evaporation.

Our focus is on enhancing the centre’s resilience and self-sufficiency.

The project involves drilling a well to guarantee daily access to water for all, which is essential for improving hygiene and maintaining the centre in good condition.

Key strengths of the project

  • The new well resolves the centre’s water shortage, securing a reliable supply for 73 people, including 67 sponsored children.
  • It enables the upkeep of gardens and green spaces across the site.
  • It directly strengthens Children of the Mekong’s mission to provide a safe and nurturing environment for every sponsored child.

Latest progress

A water source was located and drilled to a depth of 120 metres. The water is pumped to the centre’s water tower, filtered, then fed into the centre’s piping system.
