Following the earthquake on 28 March 2025 (7.7 on the Richter scale), the most violent earthquake in the country in over a century, many people were left homeless, without food, water or shelter and in a state of insecurity. In addition, many buildings (including youth centres) collapsed or were severely damaged.
Thanks to its contacts on the ground, Children of the Mekong was able to take targeted, rapid action, drawing on its local network. More than 14,000 people have been helped with €163,485 from an emergency fund. 60% of the projects that have been set up have been completed, with the rest still ongoing.

Following the earthquake that struck Myanmar, several concrete actions were implemented to meet the urgent needs of the affected populations:

In the city of Mandalay, an emergency response project was implemented following the earthquake between April and June 2025, lasting three months. It enabled the distribution of food (bags of rice, bottles of water, bottles of oil) and the provision of temporary shelter for displaced people. This project, costing €55,000, benefited 10,000 people.

A second project was carried out in April 2025 in the city of Mandalay. It enabled the purchase and installation of solar panels and the setting up of an electrical system for a girls’ shelter to pump water from the city. The project also included the distribution of food (bags of rice and non-perishable items) and medicines. With a budget of €12,637, it benefited 150 people.

In April 2025, a project was implemented in seven villages around Taungoo (Pyimanna, Ponpakone, Lenwei, Lekwetaung, Leiktho Oukpho, Thandaungyi and Phenbo). It enabled the distribution of bags of rice to affected families, as well as the renovation of some houses. This project, which is now complete, was carried out in one month at a cost of €6,000 and benefited around 1,000 people.

In Taungoo, a project has been launched to increase accommodation capacity. It includes the renovation of a boys’ home, carried out over 15 days in May 2025, and the ongoing construction of an additional home to accommodate refugee boys from Karen State. The project, which is still ongoing, is funded to the tune of €31,272 and will benefit 120 young people once completed.

In the Mandalay division, in Pyi U Lwin, a project to renovate a damaged girls’ home was carried out in May 2025, over a period of one month. This project, which is now complete, has improved the living conditions of 55 girls, at a cost of €3,532.
