The Situation
The Kiran Care programme is situated roughly a thirty-minute drive from downtown Bangkok, in the southwest of the capital, within Thung Khru Province. This region of Thailand is home to many refugees from different countries, along with a large slum known as Moo5.
The Thung Khru district is inhabited by many families living in precarious conditions and facing a range of social and economic challenges. Most households survive on very low incomes, often earned through informal or poorly paid work. These families struggle to make ends meet and endure harsh living conditions, characterized by overcrowding. They face a great number of challenges, including job insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and of course, inadequate housing. Heavy rains and flooding have aggravated the already unstable situation, leaving some families homeless and in urgent need of basic essentials like food and clothing.
Family Circumstances
This shanty town is home to a large number of low-income families, mainly migrant workers or people from rural areas who have relocated to the city in search of employment. With approximately 280 houses, it supports a population of around 1,500. The residents cope with precarious living conditions in improvised shelters, with restricted access to vital services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation. They endure severe overcrowding and face significant challenges stemming from poverty, unemployment, and a lack of basic infrastructure. Nevertheless, the community is remarkably diverse, with its many ethnic backgrounds contributing to a vibrant and enriching cultural landscape.
Through this programme, we are enabling around ten children to attend school in better conditions. Offering these children an education represents a meaningful opportunity for their future, allowing them to thrive and develop in an environment that meets their needs.
Kiran, the founder of Kiiran Care, has built a strong, trusting relationship with those she supports. She is deeply involved in their daily lives and knows the story of each family she helps. In 2015, she set up her support programme to address the urgent needs of slum dwellers, refugees, single mothers, the elderly and homeless families.
The Care Centre
For the past five years, Kiiran Care has been running a school transport initiative for children living in shanty towns. The project offers a regular pick-up and drop-off service, providing these children with safe and consistent access to school. The main goal is to improve their attendance, giving them a real opportunity to break free from the cycle of poverty.
They also support educational initiatives by providing free meals, milk and essential school supplies to ease the financial burden on parents. With many families being single-parent households, this support is all the more vital. It allows parents to focus on their work, knowing that their children are well cared for and benefit from an environment that supports their education.
