Construction of a centre for boys in Dawplin, Myanmar complete! - Children of the Mekong

Construction of a centre for boys in Dawplin, Myanmar complete!

As part of Children of the Mekong’s mission to support rural and isolated populations, a centre for schoolchildren was built in order to provide decent housing and an appropriate study space for children who would otherwise not have a place to stay or study. The project has not only given young children a brighter future but it has equally improved the lives of their families and the communities they come from.

Why was the project necessary and where is it located?

The project aimed to build a centre for secondary school pupils. The centre is located in the small town of Dawplin, in the Hpa An region of Karen State, in southern Myanmar. The aim was to provide a place to live for 40 young boys and girls from mountain villages where schooling only goes up to the end of primary school, or from the former hostel in Hpa Pun, which is now closed due to fighting in the town. Others come from camps for internally displaced persons who have had to flee their villages destroyed by fighting.

Without a place to stay, these young people were unable to continue their secondary and high school education and found themselves deprived of education, at the mercy of various networks and insecure in temporary shelters.

The aims of the project

  • Providing accommodation for vulnerable children affected by armed conflict / giving them a safe shelter where they can study in peace.

Giving young Karen children the opportunity to continue their education after primary school.

  • Providing young people with decent housing built from sustainable materials.
  • Contributing to improving the standard of education in Karen State and to the development of this very underdeveloped region.

How did the construction go?

The construction work has been completed. The building was even able to be built slightly larger than originally planned. The building is now fully operational and ready to welcome more students for the next academic year.

The project manager, Father Anselme, says:
“I am pleased to announce that all funds received were used exclusively and entirely for the construction of the boys’ boarding school.
• No funds were diverted to any other project or administrative matter.
• All expenditure was in line with the approved plan and supervised to ensure transparency, accountability and good management of the resources entrusted to us.
• The construction complied with local building regulations and prioritised quality materials to ensure long-term use and stability.”

“Young people, their families, and our entire community are deeply grateful to you. Your contribution has not only improved their living conditions, but it has also strengthened their dignity and restored their hope for a better future. Once again, please accept our deepest gratitude. This project would not have been possible without your selfless support and the collective efforts of all donors. Your contribution has brought about tangible change and provided our students with a decent and respectful place where they can live and grow with dignity. May your generosity continue to inspire hope and transformation in many lives.”
