Fully Funded Project! Emergency Relief – Typhoon and Flooding in Vietnam and Myanmar

On 7 September 2024, Typhoon Yagi struck northern Vietnam and Myanmar.

Typhoon Yagi

Between August and September 2024, relentless rains swept through the region, triggered by Typhoon Yagi, a tropical cyclone of exceptional intensity. The storm affected several countries, including Vietnam and Myanmar.

In Vietnam, on 12 September, Children of the Mekong launched an emergency project to address the needs raised by our local leaders.

In Myanmar, this project provided vital assistance to communities severely affected by the cyclone. A nutrition programme was launched in the villages of Htiarikokhu and Pekintriokhu, located in the Loikaw district of Kayah State.

Khúc Giản village

The programme leader of Khúc Giản reached out to Children of the Mekong for assistance for his village, located in Hải Phòng province, which was on the front line of Typhoon Yagi.

In Khúc Giản, we helped the family of Hải Minh, whose roof was torn off. We also contributed to the purchase of seeds and agricultural tools in response to the devastated rice fields.

Minh Dân village

The project offered support to Minh Dân village in Tuyên Quang province. This rural area was heavily impacted by the rains that followed the typhoon, with landslides, mudflows, and strong winds putting many families at risk.

This is how Trang and his family were able to receive support from the project to rebuild their home. The family of six had been living in a wooden hut built on the mountainside, which was swept away by a landslide. In a rush, Trang’s parents built a small shelter covered with tarpaulins and palm leaves. Thanks to your support, they will have a concrete house before the winter begins.

Thất Khê village

In Thất Khê, we provided assistance to the boarding house for children with disabilities, which was completely flooded. We are helping repair the building, especially the roof. Located downstream of a hydroelectric dam, the village was hit hard by the heavy rains, with floodwaters affecting the whole area. The families of our sponsored children were also impacted. Thanks to the project, we have been able to fund repairs to homes and provide essential supplies such as food and water purifiers.

Quang Lực’s house was completely destroyed by the floods. Thanks to your support, he received quick assistance from the project, and his family is already rebuilding their home.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to your support, we were also able to assist other families in the village with repairing their homes! However, the aid we provided was not always focused on rebuilding homes. For some families, the floods that followed the typhoon destroyed their livelihoods. We helped them purchase seeds, fertiliser, chickens, and pigs, allowing them to restart their income-generating activities and meet their essential needs.

NUTRITION PROJECT FOR 200 FAMILIES

All the families supported are from the villages of Htiarikokhu and Pekintriokhu, in the Loikaw Township of Kayah State. They are farmers who primarily rely on their harvests for income. Typically, after the harvest, they sell paddy or rice. Farming also takes place during the rainy season and the winter.

At the end of September, they were about to start cultivating their crops when heavy rains and rising river levels caused flooding in the rice fields. The rice plants were destroyed and rotted, leaving the families unable to meet their basic needs. We provided rice, blankets, and medicines to support them.

VISIT TO 10 VILLAGES IN THE SOUTHERN SHAN STATE

The sisters traveled to Nyaung Shwe, Nar Bawn, and Kyaing Town to meet with flood-affected families and offer support and encouragement. Some families are in extreme poverty, forced to collect cans from rubbish dumps to sell. They survive on a single meal each day. The sisters were able to provide financial assistance to help them meet their essential needs.

Since the other villages were too difficult to reach, Sister Josephine Zetaman transferred funds to other local religious communities to support them.

«I would like to thank everyone once again for the generous donations that made this relief operation possible. We are grateful for your support and compassion during these challenging times. » Sister Josephine Zetaman
