Latest news from the Montessori preschools in Myanmar

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In 2020, Children of the Mekong launched a programme to support Montessori preschools, helping the Sisters of the Good Shepherd continue their vital early childhood education work in Tachileik, Magyikwin and Hopin, Myanmar.

The project funds three Montessori preschools nurturing children’s development, and now in its sixth year continues to give young learners the best possible start in life.

Early education lays the foundation for future success: it teaches structure, basic hygiene, social skills, and activities that spark their curiosity. By the time they start primary school, they are ready to progress confidently.

Daytime care allows parents to work while keeping their children engaged and stimulated, rather than leaving them unoccupied or managing them alongside daily tasks.

The project covers the salaries of qualified teachers, sometimes with an assistant, and provides school supplies, teaching resources, transport when needed, and meals several times a week.

SUPPORTING MONTESSORI PRESCHOOLS

The project provides vulnerable young children with safe, high-quality, and inclusive preschool education across four key regions: Yangon (Dala), Magyikwin, Tachileik, and Hopin. The Sisters of the Good Shepherd and their teaching teams focus on creating a nurturing environment that supports each child’s full development.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

The Montessori method helps young children develop initiative, imagination, and critical thinking, giving them the confidence to begin primary school.

The Sisters of the Good Shepherd have established strong, enduring preschools, with qualified teachers receiving fair salaries.

Children settle quickly and gain essential skills for primary school, giving them a valuable head start.

Children are well cared for and kept fully engaged while their parents are at work.

HOW THE PROJECT WORKED IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2024-2025

IN HOPIN

This year, 79 children joined the school, with 35 preparing to graduate. Despite a challenging security context, the school kept its programmes running. A holistic approach supported the children’s growth across cognitive, physical, social, emotional and linguistic areas through medical check-ups, sports, cultural and environmental activities, and educational outings.

IN TACHILEIK

Montessori Little Star currently supports 60 children, giving them intensive preparation for primary school. The centre is full of energy and optimism, with many new enrolments already confirmed for the next term.

IN DALA (YANGON)

Yadana Alin Dan Preschool has prioritised ongoing early childhood teacher training and raising awareness of child protection. Through cultural and religious events, the centre nurtures a strong sense of community and fosters respect for children’s rights.

However, the team continues to face recurring administrative pressures over the preschool’s official registration, leaving its future uncertain.

IN MAGYIKWIN

Initially shy and reserved, the children have rapidly gained confidence, independence and language skills. Monthly birthday celebrations and regular parent meetings foster a joyful, supportive community giving every child the opportunity to flourish.

THE MONTESSORI METHOD

This project highlights that with careful preparation, home visits, meaningful celebrations and attentive supervision, children develop confidence and independence. Enriching activities, strong parental involvement and attention to nutrition provide comprehensive support, helping every child build a brighter future.
