Ongoing project: a new classroom and library in San Pedro
San Pedro School is buzzing with activity. Since registration fees were removed, student numbers have risen sharply. To keep pace with this growth, the school is building anew classroom and a library, giving students a proper place to learn. Two classrooms are already up and running, and the library is set to open in early February, furnished with tables made from reclaimed wood. Your generosity is changing lives, and we are deeply grateful. Thank you!
A GROWING COMMUNITY OF STUDENTS
San Pedro School has been welcoming sponsored children since 2005. Nestled in the heart of the mountains, students come from afar to attend classes. In recent years, registration fees have been removed so that every child in the region can continue their education and avoid dropping out.
With numbers rising each year, the school is running out of space for students to work and revise properly, especially during study hours. A new classroom and a library are therefore urgently needed.

WHY THIS PROJECT MATTERS
- A new classroom and library will allow the school to welcome more students.
- The project builds on Children of the Mekong’s work at San Pedro, where sponsorship programmes have been in place since 2005.
- Students and sponsored children will be able to learn in a quiet, more conducive environment.
- Children of the Mekong works closely with the school managers, who are fully committed to the project.
PROGRESS SO FAR
Two new classrooms are now in use and were inaugurated on Saturday 22 November 2025. The ceremony was led by the President of the Recoletos schools, a great honour for San Pedro School. Thanks to tables and chairs donated by the Recoletos School of San Carlos, the rooms are now fully furnished and are already being put to good use. Teachers are delighted with the extra space, which allows lessons to take place in more comfortable conditions.
Work on the library is under way, with preparations for the foundations already in progress.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The next step is to complete the library’s main structure. The work will focus first on the foundations, then move on to the walls, roof and framework, before the floor is laid. If all goes to plan, the project should be completed by early February.
The team also plans to build tables from the wood of the trees that were cut down to make way for the classrooms and the library.
