Thailand is one of the most developed countries in Southeast Asia. However, several ethnic minorities (Karen, Lahu, Lawa, Hmong), as well as rural areas (Isan), suffer from a lack of education and integration into Thai society.

  • 68.2 million inhabitants of which 47% of the population resides in rural areas
  • Official Language: Thai
  • Currency: Thai Baht
  • Main Religion: 95% Buddhist
  • Ethnicity: 90% Thais, 1.3% Burmese, the rest of the population is composed of various ethnic minorities (Karens, Môns, Khmers…).

CHILDREN OF THE MEKONG’S ACTIVITY IN THAILAND:

Through our child sponsorship programme, Children of the Mekong responds to the high risk of school dropout among ethnic minorities and in rural areas.

  • We support children’s education for mountain-dwelling minority communities by building schools for primary education in the mountains. Then, we run boarding houses close to secondary and high schools in larger towns, so the children can continue their education.
  • We support very poor families, economically and socially, mainly in the province of Isan. Child sponsorship supports the families economically and lets the sponsored children pursue their school curriculum in public schools (transportation, school supplies…).

Ad hoc projects such as construction and renovation of centres, allow the improvement of the living and studying conditions of the sponsored children

Children of the Mekong also supports vulnerable population groups in the slums, refugee camps and illegal migrants.
