Computer Equipment in the Philippines

This project aims to renew the computer equipment of three centres in the Philippines, giving young people access to digital tools. It will benefit around 120 young people each year, with a lasting impact estimated at nearly 600 young people over five years.

What is the situation in the Philippines?

The Philippines is still home to many families living in situations of great hardship, particularly in rural areas and in the poorer neighbourhoods of the cities. Children of the Mekong supports motivated young people from disadvantaged families, so they can continue their secondary and higher education.

In the Philippines, four centres welcome young people, offering them an environment suited to study, personal support, extra training, and access to essential educational resources (Butuan, Cebu, Dumaguete, and Tuguegarao).

The digital transformation of education and of the workplace now makes computer skills essential. Yet most of the young people at the centres do not have a computer of their own. Their families’ incomes do not allow them to buy such equipment: it represents several months of income for them.

Why is support needed?

The computer equipment at three of the four Philippine centres no longer meets the current needs of the young people they support. The number of computers available is too few for the number of students, which limits their access to these working tools. The centres currently have only 47 working computers, many of them old and worn down by years of intensive use.

Several machines have already been repaired many times over; some are very slow, others have battery problems or faulty keyboards. They therefore need increasingly frequent maintenance. These faults reduce the reliability of the equipment and disrupt the students’ schoolwork.

What is the proposed solution?

The computer equipment at some of the centres therefore needs to be renewed and reinforced, to guarantee every young person reliable access to digital tools suited to their studies.

The solution has three stages:

Immediate purchase of 20 new computers to close the current equipment gap and meet the most urgent needs.
Replacing obsolete or failing devices that have become too costly to maintain and unsuited to today’s study needs.
Setting up a durable, consistent set of equipment that is simpler to manage, maintain, and upgrade over time.

All of this will improve the young people’s working conditions, strengthening their digital independence and smoothing their access to educational resources.

Who will benefit from this project?

The beneficiaries are the young people supported at the Dumaguete, Butuan, and Cebu centres. Each year, nearly 120 young people will benefit from this new computer equipment. It will give them access to digital tools suited to the current demands of higher education and the world of work. With an average equipment lifespan of five years, nearly 600 young people will benefit directly from this project.
