Construction of a classroom and library in San Pedro
Funds raised so far: 9%
The Background
San Pedro Academy Recoletos is located in the heart of the Valencia mountains, in the province of Negros Oriental, in the south of the Philippine archipelago.
It was built in 1983 to accommodate the schoolchildren living in the surrounding mountainous area. It is the only Catholic school in the area. Some pupils walk more than 1 hours every morning to get to school. The school now has almost 400 pupils in secondary school.
The school takes in more and more pupils every year, but it does not have enough space. The school has only 8 classrooms and no study room (i.e. 50 pupils per class).
The construction of a new classroom and library will improve the working environment for all the pupils.
The project
The San Pedro school would like to build a library comprising two rooms—a library and a work area—as well as a new classroom, which will be needed to accommodate the growing number of pupils. A total of 3 new rooms.
Founded 40 years ago by the missionary fathers of the Augustinian Recollect community, the school offers an all-round education – education for mind, body and soul. The school currently has almost 400 students in middle and high school. The teaching team is made up of 16 teachers and 4 staff. All of them are supervised by Father Weno Hamo, a priest from the Augustinian Recollect congregation for over 10 years.
The school takes in more and more pupils every year, but it does not have enough space. The school has 8 classrooms, but there is no vacant space that could be used as a study room. Every day, the pupils have a compulsory study hour, supervised by their teachers or members of staff. At the moment, the courtyard is used as a study room, but the pupils are often disturbed by outside noise, passing traffic and bad weather.
The beneficiaries
The pupils and teachers at San Pedro school are eagerly awaiting the construction of this library and a new classroom. The school currently has almost 400 pupils.
The local manager
Father Weno Hamo has been headmaster of the school for 5 years and is responsible for the Caidiocan sponsorship programme. He is a trusted partner for Children of the Mekong, and his experience and involvement with young people has been a great asset to the village of Caidiocan. He is particularly dedicated and involved in the follow-up and education of the pupils and Children of the Mekong’s sponsored children.
