What did the project involve and where did it take place?

Children of the Mekong helped the Franciscan Brothers, who run the Calajo An programme, to build a new house in the mountains of Minglanilla. The Brothers take in around 15 young people who can no longer rely on their families to care for them. Most of the young people are students. Unfortunately, for various reasons, the Brothers and their pupils had to leave the house where they had been living. The new house, which has just been completed, now provides them with peaceful accommodation in good conditions.

Why was the project necessary?

As Minglanilla is located on Mount Alverna, in an isolated mountain area, the new house does not have access to a communal water supply like the other houses in the town centre. However, the brothers and godchildren need access to water to ensure that their living conditions remain decent.

How was the issue solved?

Being very isolated and located in the mountains, the only way to access water is to dig and install a pump that would bring water up to the tanks that the Brothers have already purchased. This involves digging to a depth of 72 metres (the water table is only 25 metres from the house) and installing a new pump powerful enough to pump the water up to the house.

Highlights of the project

  • The Brothers are very dedicated and have been working to help the most disadvantaged for many years, particularly alongside Children of the Mekong.
  • The house has already been built and inaugurated, and the young people are ready to move in.
  • The engineer who was in charge of the house will be responsible for the construction of this new project. He knows the Brothers well and lives in the neighbourhood of the new house, so he is familiar with the area.

Who benefits from the project?

The beneficiaries will be the 15 young people in the programme hosted by the Brothers in the new house, the Brothers themselves, as well as all the other young people in the programme, who will be able to enjoy this house as a haven of peace, a place of retreat, a place of culture and projects where they can get together.
