Construction of dormitories for boys in Maelid, Thailand

The mountainous landscape around Maelid, dotted with small Karen villages, does not facilitate daily travel. Families from these villages find it difficult to get around, especially during the rainy season. The roads are difficult to use, even dangerous or completely inaccessible. For this reason, the school has dormitories to accommodate children who live too far away, giving them the opportunity to attend school. The school is committed to providing decent conditions for the children and to helping families with very limited means as much as possible. However, government aid is not sufficient, particularly for items that are not considered ‘essential’ (such as food or teacher training).
The boys’ dormitories are separated into two different buildings far apart within the school, making it difficult for teachers to supervise them. They are located next to the river, causing noise pollution and access difficulties during the rainy season. In the end, the students cannot sleep properly, as they are disturbed by animals.

The proposed solution
To improve the quality of life for the boys at Maelid School, we want to renovate an old building. This solution will allow us to bring the boys together in one building, not far from the classrooms, and avoid the additional costs associated with new construction.
The villagers, the teaching staff and the school principal are all keen to help renovate this building. They are all committed to ensuring that the students can continue their education with a better quality of life.
Project highlights
The renovation of a single building to serve as dormitories provides many young people with a place to stay and makes it easier to supervise them.
Refurbished dormitories provide a safe place where young people can grow up in complete safety, protected from bad weather and animals.
This project perfectly complements the work of Children of the Mekong by helping young people to study in peace.
The Beneficiaries
This project will contribute to the quality of life of 21 male students. Already separated from their families by distance and weather, they will be able to gather in a suitable place and enjoy greater privacy and better sleep. In addition, these improvements will benefit the school’s 30 teachers, as they will make it easier to supervise the students.
