New library and classrooms at Kampong Koh
Funds raised so far: 2%
The Background
In the heart of Cambodia, in the province of Kampong Thom, the children of the village of Kampong Koh go to school.
The public education system in Cambodia forces pupils to pay for private tuition to supplement the incomplete curriculum provided by the mainstream school. This is a further form of corruption that compromises access to an equitable education for the poorest children.
At present, the school has the necessary resources to finance nursery classes, but lacks the means to support primary classes.
The nursery school caters for around 150 children. The primary school has 137 pupils.
Most are the children of rice farmers. Their parents live from day to day to support the family.
PROPOSED SOLUTION
The project involves transforming the foundation of the former Kampong Koh church to build two classrooms and a library.
Classes and access to the library will be free of charge. The two classrooms will be used for private lessons, tutored by teachers.
The library will be used to store books, but will also be a cultural space for music, film and art.
THE BENEFICIARIES
The beneficiaries will be:
- 130 pupils from the primary school
- 30 pupils from the Kampng Koh Anouk Vichealay secondary school
- The 15 high school students from Kampong Thom who return to the village at weekends and during the holidays.
Father Todjro Kristofia has been the parish priest of Kampong Thom for several years now. Originally from Togo, he is very familiar with Children of the Mekong, its work and its challenges. He is in charge of the project.
