Why Do Children Need Support During the Summer Holidays?

For children from ethnic minority communities, the summer holidays can be a particularly vulnerable time.

Without support, they may face:

  • a loss of learning progress
  • a lack of educational activities or family support
  • unreliable access to meals

This summer gap deepens inequalities that already exist and increases the risk of children falling behind or dropping out of school. Support during this period is therefore essential to help them remain engaged in their education.

How Do Summer Programmes Support Young People?

Summer programmes provide an ideal setting to address these challenges. By offering educational, enjoyable and enriching activities, they help children stay active and engaged during the holidays. They also provide a valuable opportunity to explore new areas of learning, develop new skills and build self-confidence.

These programmes are therefore not simply moments of entertainment, but precious opportunities for children to continue learning, growing and thriving. By investing in these initiatives, we are investing in the future of these children, giving them the tools they need to succeed in life and contribute positively to their communities.

Who Benefits from the Summer Programmes?

The summer programmes are organised in some of the most remote regions of Vietnam, where many ethnic minority communities live, including the H’Mong, Jarai, Bahnar, Khmer and Van Kieu peoples, among others.

The children supported by Children of the Mekong are not the only ones who benefit from these summer programmes. Their brothers and sisters, as well as children from the surrounding neighbourhood, are also welcome to take part.

On average, each summer programme welcomes between 150 and 200 children.
