As you may know, the sponsorship contribution will be adjusted this June 2025 to better address the sharp inflation in our countries of operation.

Our local volunteers and overseas volunteers on the ground report increasing difficulties in purchasing essential goods and school supplies, both vital to ensuring a high-quality education for our sponsored children.

Below are the answers to all the questions you may have.

On this page, you can also understand inflation in Southeast Asia, find out what we are doing to limit costs, and give us your approval on the sponsorship adjustment.

Inflation in Southeast Asia

As in Europe, prices have risen in Southeast Asia over the past eight years. This increase is more significant for basic necessities (rice, oil, water, electricity, etc.), directly impacting the most modest households.

  • In Vietnam, the price of rice has risen by almost 45% in eight years. This increase was as high as 18% in a single year (between 2023 and 2024), mainly due to severe shortages in India.
  • Laos is the country hardest hit by inflation: prices rose by 23% in 2022, 31% in 2023 and 25% in 2024.
  • In Myanmar, due to the civil war, food prices have risen by 33% in the last 10 months. Inflation is sometimes much higher in areas directly affected by the fighting.
  • In the Philippines, where inflation has been fairly well controlled, the consumer price index rose by 3.5% per year between 2017 and 2024. Unfortunately, it is everyday consumer goods that have seen the biggest increases.

Reducing costs

As sponsors, we all want to keep the charity’s operating and communication costs as low as possible.

For many years, Children of the Mekong’s charitable expenditure (i.e. the proportion of donations used for our education programmes in Asia) has fluctuated between 83 and 86%.

Our charity was awarded the IDEAS label in 2011 and has been renewed ever since (2015, 2019 and 2024), guaranteeing the proper use of funds, financial transparency and the effectiveness of our work.

However, we want to continue our efforts to keep costs down by:

Seeking partners for donations in kind

Companies help us to spend less. For example, this year, JC Decaux and VYP offered us a poster campaign, the Michelin Foundation donated tuk-tuks and school buses, and AVB, Harfang, Dimsi, Amossys and Axa enabled us to renew our IT equipment. However, we are still looking for help with plane and train tickets and a minivan.

By limiting postal costs

Paper mailings are expensive. We have chosen to send as much communication as possible by email: news and videos of your sponsored child, country information, etc. If you are not receiving our emails, please remember to send us your email address!
