Two new rooms and classrooms: brighter days ahead for Battambang’s sponsored children!

Hope for a more suitable learning environment

The Children of the Mekong centre in Battambang is home to over eighty students from the surrounding area. It provides a safe and supportive environment for learning. Most come from very poor families and are welcomed when distance, violence, or a lack of family support would otherwise prevent them from going to school. They live at the centre, where they sleep, eat, attend additional classes, and take part in activities that support their personal growth. They go home for school holidays or to celebrate Buddhist festivals.

One of the centre’s buildings was no longer fit for the students. Damaged by years of leaks and heavy rains, it was replaced with a new building better suited to their needs.

Key Strengths of the Project

  • To provide decent living conditions for the students
  • A storage room sufficient for the whole centre
  • To free up space in other buildings for an extra office and an infirmary
  • More areas for evening study
  • A new staff bedroom, a classroom suitable for events, and an efficient drainage system

Latest Progress

The reconstruction of the building at the Centre in Battambang is well under way!

After the old building was demolished, the foundations of the new accommodation were firmly laid, marking a fresh start for the students. The walls went up, the roof was installed, and a stable, secure shelter began to take shape.

The windows are now in place, and the exterior has been painted, giving the building a bright, warm, and welcoming look.

LOOKING AHEAD

The project is now in its final stage, bringing the students one step closer to moving into their brand-new building!

The next steps are to finish the interior painting, creating a bright, clean, and welcoming space. With electricity, lighting, and fans in place, the students will enjoy comfortable living, especially during the hottest months.

Wastewater drainage work is also in progress. A connection to the existing building will follow, allowing students and staff to move easily around the centre.

In just a few weeks, this new space will give the students a clean, comfortable, and welcoming living environment they can truly enjoy.
