Sponsorship is a long-term commitment to a child that you support. However, you can, of course, stop your sponsorship at any time. In this case, we undertake to give priority to finding a new sponsor for this child.
You write and receive the first letters!
On average, sponsors receive two to three letters a year. Sponsorship is a lesson in patience, in this age of immediacy! Your sponsored child will be delighted to get to know you better, do not hesitate to send pictures and postcards!
Children of the Mekong partners with Give.Asia for the sponsors willing to donate in Singapore Dollar. Child sponsorship is S$50/month (or S$75 for a university student), and you can set up a monthly payment on Give.Asia.
If you prefer, you can donate in different currencies:
Sponsor a child in euro (the form will be in French, you can recieve a tax receipt for France only).
Most sponsors follow their sponsored children through to the end of their schooling. It often happens that a sponsor decides to sponsor several children! Sponsorship is a long-term commitment. However, if during a period you encounter difficulties and can no longer ensure your sponsorship, simply contact us and together we will find a solution to enable you to look after your sponsored child during this more difficult period.
If, for personal reasons, you wish to stop your sponsorship, simply ask us by email or telephone. Of course, we will continue to support your sponsored child’s education.
The children supported by Children of the Mekong are identified by our local programme managers. Living and involved locally, they know the families in difficulty and their needs. In pairs with our overseas volunteers, they select the children who need a sponsorship. To do so, they look at 2 criteria in priority:
The poverty of the family through assessment studies (social audit, family income, land, animals, etc.).
The motivation of the child to go to school, and of their parents to send them to school.
The aim of sponsorship is not to give money to fill a financial gap but to enable the child to go to school and study, to enable them to find a job that will enable them to support themselves and their family. Learn more about this on âSupport and Educate through sponsorshipâ
In Asia, our local programme managers  ensure that the funds are well spent and that your sponsored child continues their education.
The overseas volunteers are the eyes and ears of the charity. They supervise the programmes and monitor their finances.
Our accounts are audited every year and available on our website.
Check by yourself! Come and visit us at our London office, our headquarter in Paris, meet our chapter of volunteers in Singapore, or go and meet your sponsored child in South-East Asia!
The exchange of letters allows you to create a lasting relationship with your sponsored child. Your sponsored child will probably have only one person from whom they will receive letters, and itâs you. The letter helps them understand who you are, and develops trust. Our local programme managers and overseas volunteers are constantly reminding us how important it is for a sponsored child to receive letters from their sponsor!
Not all children like to write, and like any relationship to develop, it takes time. But this is also the strength of the sponsorship. Little by little, over time, your sponsored child letters will reflect their evolution, their openness, their maturity.
You can write in English as all letters are translated by volunteers into the language of your sponsored child. This translation also explains the long delay between each letter. Far from the era of instantaneity, sponsorship is a good school of patience, and each letter takes on average two months to arrive, sometimes more when your sponsored child lives in a very isolated area.
You can involve your children or grandchildren in writing the letters, sending photos or simply a postcard. Whatever the size of the letter, be sure it will make your sponsored child happy and proud!
Of course, it is! If you have the chance to go to Asia, donât miss this beautiful opportunity to meet your Sponsored Child!
For your sponsored child, itâs a great opportunity to understand who is their sponsor is and how important they are to you, but also itâs a great way to see the impact of your sponsorship and to get to know your sponsored child better.
The sponsorship is SGD50 per month. 75.7% is sent to Asia, rest is used for the core costs and emergency response of the charity.
The majority of the sponsorship is given to sponsored children but sometimes can also support non-sponsored children (in Vietnam and the Philippines for example). The rest of the money covers, when necessary the translation of the letters and postal costs, and a solidarity fund for emergency response for the families.
The children and their parents are given the sponsorship on a signature.
The sponsorship donation is distributed in various ways, depending on the country and the local customs. It covers the school costs of the children (fees, uniforms, stationeries, booksâŚ) and the daily better off of the families (food, hygienic productsâŚ).
If you would like to know in detail how your sponsorship is given to your child, please do contact us.
She was a 6-year-old girl, shy and with learning difficulties. 10 years and many exchanges of letters later, I met her in Laos: a young girl who was radiant, spontaneous and keen to become a teacher. An impressive evolution!
From Europe to Asia, transparency, seriousness and enthusiasm are the terms that best describe Children of the Mekong. There is such a human quality in each of the members who make up this organisation! The desire to take part in this adventure is necessarily contagious!
Children of the Mekong is a registered charity and is entitled to receive donations and legacies. Since 1958, it has continued to evolve and adapt to the demands of the field. Intended to be a link of friendship with the peoples of South-East Asia, it has remained true to its original vocation: to love and help poor and suffering children by offering them a future through education.
