Cambodian Scholars from the London Scholarship Children of the Mekong

Welcome to Chinda Haing and Sreylang Long!

We’re delighted to inform you that for the third London Scholarship, Children of the Mekong will welcome Chinda Haing and Sreylang Long, two outstanding students from Cambodia. They recently graduated in Chemical Engineering and Tourism Management respectively. We are grateful to our corporate partner Credit Agricole – CIB for sponsoring the programme for the third consecutive year.

We’re thrilled to let you know that their visa was granted earlier this week so they are scheduled to arrive on 3rd November. They will be staying with families in London who have kindly offered to host them during their three-month stay in London.

After a welcome week to help them acclimatise to London, they will attend intensive English courses for one month. From early December, CACIB will welcome them for a three-weeks work shadowing experience in their London office. Following the Christmas holiday period, they will have the chance to do more shadowing experiences in their fields of study before returning home at the end of January.

Sreylang Long story

Streylang Long has been sponsored since she was 19 years old and dreams of becoming a successful manager. Her parents are farmers and she has two older sisters and one older brother. Due to Cambodian history and the Khmer Rouge regime, her parents unfortunately never had the opportunity to access education. Her parents’ daily life was to go to the rice field and plant some rice, to earn money to support the whole family.

But through the sponsorship she received from Children of the Mekong, Strealany graduated from the Royal University of the capital, Phnom Penh, in tourism management. We are very proud of her, and one week after she came back to Cambodia, we are glad to inform you that Strealany managed to find a job as a human resources manager. Congratulations to her. Chinda Haing story

Chinda also comes from a farming family and same as the Streylang family, they had no choice but to plant the rice, feed the chickens and look after the cows, to earn a living and satisfy their needs. She has been sponsored since she was 11 years old. She has the dream to become a researcher in environmental issues. She is the youngest one in her family, she has four older brothers and four older sisters. Her parents never had the chance to access education and this is also the case for some of her siblings.

But through the sponsorship she received from Children of the Mekong, Chinda graduated from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, with a specialization in chemical engineering. Thanks to the scholarship and her experience in London, Chinda found a desire to pursue her vocation in the environmental field, she wants to be a researcher and bring a positive impact to her country.
